 grito
/ˈɡɾi.tu/
Portuguese · masculine noun · plural: gritos

1. A scream, shout, or cry; a loud vocal expression of pain, fear, anger, joy, or surprise.
2. A forceful call intended to attract attention, give a warning, or ask for help.
3. Figurative. An intense expression of protest, resistance, longing, or emotional release.

Origin: From Portuguese gritar, through Vulgar Latin critare, traced to Latin quiritare, “to cry out, call for help, or protest.”
A Portuguese word that can be translated into English as “scream,” “shout,” or “cry,” although each translation captures a different aspect of its expressive range. The noun derives from the verb gritar, whose etymology is traced through the reconstructed Vulgar Latin critare to the Latin quiritare, associated with calling out, appealing for help, and protesting. This linguistic history places urgency and the desire to be heard close to the word’s origins. In its most concrete sense, a grito is a forceful vocal sound: breath becomes vibration, the voice rises, and an internal experience enters the surrounding space. It can contain recognizable words or emerge without language, carrying pain, fear, surprise, anger, excitement, or joy through its intensity and tone.
